history of coffee - who, what, where, how why

The history of coffee can be subdivided to the two parts of the world, the western countries and the eastern countries. For western countries, coffee was not introduced until around three centuries ago, but for eastern countries, it has been used as a beverage in much more earlier times.

In fact, the first most credible date of the use of coffee dates back to 800 B.C, in which most Arabian legends have already told stories of a mysterious black and bitter beverage that had the ability to stimulate ones body. Also, coffee has also been long known for its medicinal properties, in fact, it was used as a medicine by Avicenna in about the year 1000 A.D.

However, most researchers and etymologists believe that the coffee plant first originated in Africa, in an Ethiopian region called Kaffa, from which the name of coffee was derived from. Slowly, it spread to other countries, and by the year 1500, evidence of the first ever coffee traders showed up in Europe. From then on, coffee became an integral part of the daily lives of both westerners and easterners, and hence, with the increase in demand for coffee, also came more researchers devoting time to research about the coffee plant, as well as the implementation of taxes.

Despite its origin in Africa, its emergence and introduction to the whole world can be attributed to the Europeans. This is because the favorable conditions of the countries in Europe, allowed coffee plants to grow and thrive much more easily as compared to the harsh conditions in Africa.

Ever since its introduction to the western and eastern world, coffee has become an integral part in our daily lives. This is shown by the fact that coffee became the top agricultural export in twelve countries back in 2004.
